THE PALESTINIAN YOUTH ENSEMBLE

The Palestinian Youth Ensemble is a cultural production initiative by the Palestinian Youth Movement, with the intention of bringing together Palestinian and Arab musicians around the world to engage in cultural production as a site of struggle for national liberation, where culture is not a backdrop to the Palestinian struggle, but one of its most vital frontlines.

Launched at the 2nd annual People’s Conference for Palestine, the first iteration of the ensemble brought together voices and instrumentalists from New York, Chicago, the Bay Area, Toronto, Houston and the DMV. The ensemble opened the conference with a powerful procession, performing Mawtini, the anthem of our people. This grounded the gathering in the struggle we carry as a diaspora, reminding us that no matter the distance, our roots to our land remain unshaken and our voices are bound to our shared liberation struggle with our people back home.

The ensemble has also performed a collection of songs that carry the full spirit of the Palestinian cause: honouring the martyrs of Palestine, affirming Gaza as our compass, lifting the voices of our political prisoners in the Zionist prisons, holding fast to our promise of return,  and declaring our unyielding stubbornness as a people who will never bend and remain steadfast in our determination to return.

For Palestinians, culture is both memory and a site of struggle. It is the water we swim in: the songs in our homes, the posters in our neighborhoods, the stories and art that shape our daily lives. Zionism has long understood this power, targeting and assassinating our writers, poets, teachers, and musicians in an effort to sever us from our identity. From the assassination of Ghassan Kanafani for his pen, to the killing of Refaat Al Areer for his words, Israel has tried to silence the cultural resistance that sustains and advances our movement. Yet every poem, dance, and song that emerges from Palestine and its diaspora declares: we are a dignified people, a people with a rich history, memory, and we hold an unbreakable bond to our land.

The Palestinian Youth Ensemble embraces this inheritance. Through song, storytelling, and performance, we reclaim our narrative, counter Zionist erasure, and affirm culture as a living act of defiance. Our work is not only about preserving tradition but about evolving it, embedding the politics of our movement into the hearts of our communities and ensuring that future generations inherit a revolutionary culture of resistance and return.

As Ghassan Kanafani reminded us, the struggle for Palestine is a struggle for culture. To create, preserve, and wield culture is to protect our national identity and to confront colonization at its core. The Ensemble carries this mandate forward, building a cultural front that strengthens our people’s spirit, unites us across displacement, and keeps alive the certainty of liberation and return.
